This photograph shows the double covered bridge in Newton Falls that was built over the west branch of the Mahoning River in 1856. The bridge seen here is a replacement of an 1832 bridge in the same location, and was constructed to fit the route of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal that had just been completed. It was in use for 86 years before being closed in 1942 and replaced with a concrete span during World War II. Nearby on the Mahoning's east branch is the Newton Falls covered bridge, constructed in 1831, which is the second oldest bridge still in existence in Ohio. It is also the only covered bridge in Ohio that has a covered walkway, which was added in 1921 for school children to cross the bridge on their way to a nearby school. The only remaining covered bridge in Trumbull County, the bridge is also the oldest covered bridge in Ohio that is still in operation at its original location. Description: The Newton Falls covered bridge was built over the east branch of the Mahoning River around 1831. A crosswalk was added in 1921 for children crossing the bridge on their way to the school on Center Street. The Newton Falls bridge is considered the second oldest existing covered bridge in Ohio, the oldest covered bridge in use on its original site, the only covered bridge in the state with a covered crosswalk, and the last surviving covered bridge in Trumbull County. Built on the Town Lattice truss plan, the bridge is 123 feet long and twenty-four feet wide. It has a clear span of 101 feet and a sixteen foot-wide roadway. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the structure is maintained by Trumbull County. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The east annex of the Ohio Penitentiary, where death row and the execution chamber were located, displayed photographs of hundreds of prisoners who were condemned to death throughout the state’s history. This portrait of Tony Rotunno is one of them. Rotunno was convicted of the murder of Town Marshal Scott M. Vasbinder during an attempted robbery in Newton Falls, OH. The caption at the bottom of his photograph reads: “No. 173, Tony Rotunno of Trumbull County, electrocuted April 28th, 1933, for the Murder of Officer Scott Vasbinder.” Altogether there were 315 people who were electrocuted in the state of Ohio between 1897 and 1963. Rotunno was the 173rd prisoner to be executed in this manner. He was 31 years old when he died. View on Ohio Memory.
